Are you interested in gaining your Aquatic First Aid Level 1?
This 8hr practical British Canoeing Awarding Body First Aid course is perfect if your active in outdoors but close to help. it has been designed to support Paddlers, Paddlesport Instructors, Coaches and Leaders to support you to look after your fellow paddlers in a First Aid emergency.

Do I have to be a Paddler to attend?
No the BCAB Aquatic First Aid Level 1, covers the same syllabus as other 8hr course such as the Emergency First Aid at Work course. You’ll learn the fundamentals of first aid in the and consider the additional needs of dealing with a First Aid emergency outdoors, gaining the skills and confidence to manage a first aid emergency. There is no requirement to go on the water as part of this course.

Who is it for?
British Canoeing, Scottish Canoe Association, Canoe Wales and Canoe Association of Northern Ireland require a minimum 8 hour first aid qualification for all Helms, Instructors, Coaches, Guides and Leaders as part of update requirements. You can read more about the update requirements here.

Who recognises it?
The Aquatic First Aid Level 1 meets BCAB minimum registration requirements for Helms, Instructors, Coaches, Guides and Leaders (up to and including Sheltered Water) and meets the requirements of other National Governing Bodies and Employers It meets the requirements Institute of Outdoor Learning (Band 2) however we do encourage you to check with your employer/ other bodies before booking to ensure they will accept it.
What else do i need to know?
Successful completion of our Aquatic First Aid course leads to a qualification certificate, awarded by British Canoeing Awarding Body who has oversight of this qualification. Our experienced providers are active paddlesport coaches. The course is valid for 3 years however we recommend you practise first aid skill regularly and as a minimum on an annual basis.
The minimum participant age is 14 years of age.
Aquatic First Aid Health and Safety
This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated casualties on the floor, performing simulated chest compressions on a manikin and moving over rough, uneven ground.
If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment. Please see Paddles Up Training Reasonable Adjustment Policy.
Please be aware that we will discuss some real-life incidents in detail and will view some slides and video of serious medical and traumatic incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.

Course Assessment
Candidates who demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the skills and theory covered in the course are awarded the British Canoeing Awarding Body Aquatic First Aid Level 1 Award. The assessment tasks are on-going throughout the course.
