The Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Training will help you to plan trips with confidence.
Your course will for example, support you to consider the weather, tides and provide ideas to be able to plan coastal journeys with confidence.

First of all, this award is all about planning safe journeys on the sea. So, whether you are paddling with friends or using the training course as preparation for a Leadership qualification, this hands-on course is packed with information to consider when planning a day out on the sea.
If you needed any more convincing, the course is completely based around training, raising awareness with no assessment. Structured to support you, our experienced tutors will ensure you have plenty of time practising, using exercises to develop your confidence, as well as understanding how you can develop skills and experience after the course.
The course will cover many subjects; here is an outline of what you will explore during your course:
Course Outline
- You will develop an understanding of interpreting maps, charts and pilots;
- You will explore and practice different ways to access tidal information;
- The tutors will support you in the use of a compass;
- You will develop techniques to locate your position on the sea;
- Our tutors will share with you top tips to planning coastal trips;
- You will know how to obtain and understand weather forecasts;
- You will investigate the role of the Coastguard and how to contact them.
Our CNTP courses can be delivered in a classroom, using a virtual classroom or on the water – allowing you the freedom to choose the learning that is right for you!
There will be opportunities to ask questions to further your knowledge and meet like-minded people during the course. Many of our course candidates develop long lasting friendships, connections and contacts.

Content
This is a training course with no assessment. Your course will support you in planning coastal sea trips using a variety of sources of information, providing you with the tools and resources to consider options to plan safe journeys.
We have chosen to provide the British Canoeing Awarding Body Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Training course for two reasons:
- Firstly British Canoeing Awarding Body has a longstanding reputation of providing industry leading qualifications that are recognised internationally as well as closer to home
- British Canoeing Awarding Body has over 40 years’ experience in safety training and we have every confidence in the robustness and procedures that underpin the course design and delivery.
