Structured to support you, our experienced tutors will ensure you have plenty of time practising, using exercises to develop your confidence, as well as understanding how you can develop skills and experience after the course.
The course will cover many subjects; here is an outline of what you will explore during your course:
Course Outline
- You will develop an understanding of interpreting charts and pilots;
- You will explore and practice different ways to access tidal stream information;
- The tutors will support you in planning more complex trips;
- You will develop techniques in calculating vectors and negotiate open crossings;
- Our tutors will share with you top tips in navigating in poor visibility;
- You will know how to obtain and understand a variety of weather forecasts.
There will be opportunities to ask questions to further your knowledge and meet like-minded people during the course. Many of our course candidates develop long lasting friendships, connections and contacts.

Our OWNTP courses can be delivered in a classroom, using a virtual classroom or on the water – allowing you the freedom to choose the learning that is right for you!
There is no need to register for this training course, by using the ‘find a course’ function you can book straight onto the 8-hour course.
However, you will have needed to complete the Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning training course or hold the relevant knowledge.

This is a training course with no assessment. Your course will support you in planning open crossings and more complex trips at sea using a variety of sources of information, providing you with the tools and resources to consider options to plan safe journeys.
