What is the Swim Event Safety Award all about? If you want to provide support to a water event, work with a Water Safety team at a water based event? looking to escape the 9 – 5 and have an exciting careers in the event would? then the Swim Event Safety Award could be for you!
Who is it for?
The Swim Event Safety Award covers the learning required for an individual to be deployed as part of a water safety team at an event based on or near water.
to attend the SESA award you will need:
- Be at least 14 years of age at the start of the course
- Competent to paddle & control the craft you choose to paddle during the course
- Have an in date First Aid certificate (minimum 4hr First aid award)
- Be able to swim up to 25m in canoeing clothing
We would recommend you have a minimum of the Paddle Explore Award in your chosen craft or equivalent experience.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Successful completion of our SESA course leads to a qualification certificate, awarded by British Canoeing Awarding Body who has oversight of this qualification. Our experienced providers are active in the swim event safety industry and paddlesport coaches. The course is valid for 3 years however we recommend you practise skills regularly and as a minimum on an annual basis.
The SESA Revalidation course is the correct course for revalidation
AQUATIC HEALTH AND SAFETY
This course requires participants to undertake some degree of manual handling and physical exertion, including moving simulated casualties, moving over rough, uneven ground and entering the water to rescue simulated casualties in the water.
If you think that you may have a condition, which may pose a problem or may prevent you from taking a full and active part on the course, we may be able to make a reasonable adjustment. Please see Paddles Up Training Reasonable Adjustment Policy.
Please be aware that we will discuss some real-life incidents in detail and will view some slides and video of serious incidents. If this is likely to cause you distress, please discuss this with your trainer in confidence prior to the course beginning so that we can make any necessary adjustments.

Unit 2: Practical Skills
Course Assessment
There is no formal assessment. Assessment is on-going throughout the course. you will been deemed as having passed the course providing they show a good level of understanding of the theory elements of the course and perform the practical skills adequately.
Paddling Ability
Whilst there is no set paddling competency qualification required, you will need to demonstrate good boat control throughout the course to be able to perform the practical skills adequately.
