What the Role Entails

As an Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning Provider (OWNTP) you will help support the development of sea kayak paddlers and, as a result, help them carry out safer journeys in advanced conditions.
Being an OWNTP Provider is demanding but also rewarding, as a result you will be working with paddlers to develop their advanced navigation. This includes both the technical and theoretical aspects. This knowledge will help them gain further independence as paddlers, coaches and leaders.
One of your main roles for instance will be to support aspirant Advanced Sea Kayak Leaders, however this course is open to anyone who wishes to undertake journeys on the sea in challenging conditions safely.
To help you prepare for your role, we recommend you read the becoming an OWNTP Provider Support Document and the course syllabus and documentation here.
Applications are open year-round. You can apply by booking on to an orientation course through our event booking system. The application form will be part of the booking process.
What will you do as an OWNTP Provider?
First of all you will provide OWNTP courses, but there is a lot more to the role! for instance:
- Providing course candidates with a clear development plan at the end of the course.
- Acting as an ambassador for British Canoeing Awarding Body Qualifications and Paddles Up Training.
- Supporting continuous, professional development of coaches and leaders through safety and navigation workshops.

support document. This includes observing, working on and supporting current OWNTP Providers on their courses. The Orientation day itself will involve you working alongside other aspirant Providers and a National Trainer.
Being a successful Provider will involve:
- Giving great coaching on open water navigation and safety skills to a range of participants.
- Actively planning and leading in open water journeys in advanced conditions.
- Being able to deliver a wide range of Personal Performance Awards in the advanced water environment.
