Description
Your Advanced Surf Kayak Award is designed to advance your surfing skills, techniques and accuracy in decision-making for a safe day surfing in a range of environments. This includes reefs, points, offshore breaks and sandy beaches.
As we can now surf in more locations you will need to know the environmental factors for each location to ensure that you have chosen the correct place. You will continue to look at the bathymetric profile of the beach to decide where the best surf will be. As well as this, you will bear in mind any environmental impact your presence will have.
What does it involve?
As we may be further away from the shore or a landing point, you will need to consider what extra equipment you may need for a session on the water. You will also need to bear in mind how to get your craft to the water without injuring yourself or damaging the craft. As well as ensuring you have the skills to enact more challenging rescues should you need to.
You will develop your own personal skills to allow you to have flair and improvisation at the wave face. You will become confident in powerful, steep, pitching, fast, hollow and heavy waves. This includes riding the wave on your terms. You will learn how to link your manoeuvres seamlessly and which turns are the most effective. This includes how to ensure you are ending your ride on the most powerful part of the wave, the lip.
After each session, you and your Coach will reflect on what was successful. Together you will determine where to go next. This will be in accordance to your own personal goals.
Each day we spend kayak surfing further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two surf experiences ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision-making and paddling ability.

If you have never kayak surfed before you may wish to look at the Surf Kayak Award or the Progressive Surf Kayak Award.
If you feel that you already have some experience surf kayaking and would like to progress further, then you may wish to look at 1-1 coaching or contacting a mentor to support your development.
Content
During this award you will build on your extensive experience to surf in a variety of conditions. You will identify what further hazards more advanced conditions create and what to do should you get in to difficulty. As well as an understanding of the environmental factors which affect the location of your ride.
This will include:
- External Factors – Where are we going to go?
- Equipment
- Getting to the Beach or Reef
- At the Beach or Reef
- Surfing Skills
- After the Surf Session
- Future Development
Course Assessment
The Advanced Surf Kayak Award has no formal assessment. Each surfing experience will further develop your knowledge and skills. With no two experiences ever the same, we will never stop learning. You and your Coach will decide where you go next after each session in accordance to your personal goals. Your award will be certificated when you are ready.
