Developing your coaching philosophy

Developing and presenting your coaching philosophy is a central part of your performance coach journey. In your final mentor session, you will present your coaching philosophy, and this will be sent to your assessor who, on assessment day, will expect to see your philosophy align with your coaching actions.
Often connected with deep-thinking people from history, philosophy actually impacts and influences us throughout our day-to-day lives. In this webinar, we will use philosophy to identify how our values and beliefs can (and do!) influence the way we coach. We will explore some of the different branches of philosophy and use these to ask ourselves some challenging questions that, we hope, will lead to new insights.

This Webinar will be led by Ed Christian.

Questions for discussion might include:

  • How do coaches know what to do?
  • Who holds the ‘power’ in the coach-learner relationship?
  • What does it mean to be a coach?
  • What is the value of coaching?
  • Type of presentation

This will be a highly interactive webinar. Following an outline of concepts and key terms, we will use your experience as the basis for discussion and free-flowing conversation. Be prepared to think and reflect deeply on the experiences that have shaped you as a coach and contribute these to the discussion.

Understanding and developing skilled performance

This webinar will focus on three key questions:

  • What is skilful performance in paddlesport?
  • How do we support the development of skills?
  • How does your coaching philosophy underpin your approach to developing skilled performance?

We will explore these questions through conversation, using examples from our experiences and by considering key models of skill learning. Although we will look at some theoretical ideas, the intention is to keep this minimal and applied to paddlesport.

We will seek to make links between your ideas about learning skills and your coaching philosophy. For example, does your philosophy align with coaching behaviours that prioritise developing memory of how to perform a skill (i.e., learning happens in the brain) or that prioritises how paddlers interact with their environment, or maybe both? More importantly, can you clearly explain your thinking and give examples of how your coaching behaviours align with your beliefs? If not, let us sharpen this up!

Type of presentation:

As well as some presentation of key content, this interactive webinar will be made up of conversation, debate, Q&A and problem solving.

Understanding motivations for performance coaching

Understanding and responding to your learners motivation is central to progressing through the Performance Coach pathway. The ability to recognise and respond to differing needs and aspirations from paddlers is crucial and allows the opportunity to develop a more personalised and appropriate coaching environment. Therefore, developing our understanding around creating a healthy motivational climate is foundational to our approach.

We will use the principles of Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory, as well as reflections on personal experiences, to explore ideas about motivating learners in a positive and long-term way. Specifically, we will consider:

The role of competence and skill in supporting motivation
How the social environment and personal relationships affect us
The importance of autonomy and the sense of having some form of personal power over what you are doing
