Coaching Pedagogy: The art and science of learning in paddlesport – 24th June 2026
This webinar is part of the Performance Coach Webinar Series, hosted by Pete White and Ed Christian.
Pete is a performance coach developer and mentor with 10 years of experience in coach education across various training and educational establishments. Ed is a performance coach facilitator and national trainer, bringing nearly 30 years of paddlesport coaching experience and 15 years in educating and developing coaches.
Is coaching an art or a science?
This interactive webinar explores coaching through both human and scientific lenses. Together we’ll examine how experience, judgement, and context shape coaching craft, while also unpacking the underlying principles of how people learn complex skills.
We’ll look at what models‑based approaches can offer modern coaching, and take a fresh, practical look at some of the lesser‑understood elements of Mosston and Ashworth’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles. Join the conversation, share your perspectives, and learn from fellow practitioners—everyone benefits when we explore these questions together.
As well as some presentation of key content, this interactive webinar will be made up of conversation, debate, Q&A and problem solving.
Learners registered on the Performance Coach programme and holders of Performance Coach, BC/UKCC Level 3 Coach and BCU Level 4 and 5 Coaches can use their discount code to receive a £10 discount on the session. Paddle UK Members will receive a 10% discount.

Driven by curiosity, she focuses on making technical excellence fun (playing!), and on translating the science behind the art of coaching for coaches, paddlers, and adventurers at every level.
Lara is a lecturer at the University of the Highlands and Islands and has experience coaching and instructing in a range of outdoor disciplines. She runs a full-time Further Education course focused on developing the personal and professional foundations for a career in the sector, and a degree level course in Inclusive Adventure. As a former Architect, she is also interested in understanding interactions between individuals, communities and environment in relation to outdoor studies. She is currently serving as Team Leader of Kintail Mountain Rescue Team.
How do we coach in ways that genuinely honour human difference?
This interactive webinar explores coaching through a difference-not-deficit lens, inviting you to examine how your practices, assumptions, and experiences shape inclusion.
Together we’ll look at what it means to recognise uniqueness as an asset rather than a challenge, and how shifting from a deficit perspective to a difference perspective can transform the coaching environment. We’ll explore real-world examples and experiences across areas such as gender and neurodiversity, considering how these dimensions of identity influence learning, communication, and participation.
