I help run a paddlesports group called East of England Paddlesports and I decided to take on the SUP Instructor qualification to aid in running the group and be able to provide lessons to spread the joy of SUP. As the only female admin, I wanted to be able to provide women only lessons as the Instructor world seems to be male dominated and there have been times when women have mentioned they’d be more comfortable with a fellow female Instructor.
I started paddleboarding in 2019 and having always been in or on the water, it was an easy transition and obvious sport I’d be hooked on. I like going out on group events, as well as solo paddles chasing sunrises and sunsets. It’s where I can get my peace as a busy working mum!
I learnt so much from Phil. Just how to engage with students to making a lesson fun. I also learnt some new skills that would benefit me in the long run with my own skills. Who knew that one simple tip of using the paddle as a balance would change how I do tricks like step back turns, to even standing up whilst moving!
Next steps…
I’d like to be able to provide lessons with our paddlesports group but also would love to start doing women’s paddle days or some skill/confidence building/taster sessions. Join our Facebook group ‘East of England Paddlesports’ for more information on events and paddles around the East of England
Become a Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor
The SUP Instructor is a great first step for stand up paddleboarders looking to deliver safe and enjoyable taster/starter sessions based on your group’s needs and aspirations.
The 2 day course will support you with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.
