Paddles Up Training would like to congratulate Dan for becoming a Performance SUP Sheltered Water Coach!
Dan talks us through his paddling journey and why he decided to become a Performance Coach.
Born in Hong Kong and having spent my teenage years on the Isle of Man, I have had the opportunity to engage in a range of watersports, and become qualified to introduce others to what I call the ‘freedom of water’.
Over recent years, more and more of my time on the water, both personally and as a paddlesport coach, has been on a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). It is so accessible and versatile, and a lot of fun.
Most of my coaching is with the Sea Cadets, and I deliver courses across the country. I love sharing my passion for paddleboarding, particularly with young people – it’s incredibly rewarding to see the smiles on their faces!
As a Paddlesport Instructor Tutor and SUP Sheltered Water Coach Tutor and Assessor, and someone who is always on the lookout for opportunities to continue my own development, the Performance Coach Award was an obvious next step.
I felt real ownership throughout my Performance Coach journey, and it was really beneficial that the different components of the award complemented each other.
I enjoyed shaping my coaching philosophy, which I think also reflects my outlook on life more generally, especially to “inspire paddlers to explore and enjoy different experiences to positively stretch and challenge themselves”.
I also had thought-provoking, reflective sessions with my mentor and invaluable coach developer touchpoints where I gained insights from other coaches, including those from different disciplines. This was, of course, coupled with lots of paddleboarding and SUP coaching!
I am proud to be a SUP Sheltered Water Performance Coach, and I have already been able to put my learning into practice.
