Description
Your Slalom Perform Award will progress your slalom techniques and skills. This will give you the ability to plan and apply decision making skills according to the environment. You will further develop your speed and ability to allow for confidence and proficiency in skills and kit for an enjoyable slalom session.
You will continue to develop your ability to read the environment to help you make decisions about when and where to paddle. This will also influence the kit that you choose during the session to ensure you are comfortable and safe on the water. A slalom course will often be a shared space. You will need to consider where is safe to get onto the water and what etiquette there is for the water that you are using.
What is involved?
This award will help you reflect on how you prepare for a session. You and your Coach will look at how you can improve your warm up routine to ensure you are mentally and physically ready for the session. Together, you will choose the purpose of each session which will give you focus for when you are out paddling.
You will continue to develop your key slalom paddling skills. This includes keeping the boat on the line you want and using the conditions to help you steer and manoeuvre to ensure you keep on the inside pole. As well as how to approach stagger gates and how to monitor and track your movement through it. Your Coach will help you develop specific upstream manoeuvres such as:
Back of the Blade
Sweep
One Stroke
You will learn how to position your body to achieve the best outcome from each of these manoeuvres and when they will be best used.
After each session, you and your Coach will reflect and identify where to go next. You will use observations from video and other paddlers to help shape your analysis. This will determine the focus of your next sessions.
Each day we spend in a slalom boat further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two training sessions ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision-making and paddling ability.
