What the Role Entails
As a Bell Boat Helm Provider, you will be responsible for teaching candidates how to safely lead and take charge of a Bell Boat. These boats are a very stable craft, making them very popular for running starter and activity sessions. Bell Boat Helm Providers will be introducing hundreds, if not thousands, of paddlers to the sport.
For many, this will be their first step on a coaching or leading pathway. It is important, therefore, to support your learners and help them be passionate about paddlesport. To prepare you for this role, you should look at the requirements on the How to Become a Provider Document. As well as reading the course syllabus here.
You can become a Bell Boat Helm Provider year-round. There are no orientation events, instead you complete a logbook.
What will you do as a Bell Boat Helm Provider?
- Deliver Bell Boat Helm courses
- Support candidates during the training and assessment parts of the course
- Act as an ambassador for British Canoeing Awarding Body Qualifications and Paddles Up Training
- Support the continuous professional development of coaches and leaders by delivering workshops
What does the development process look like?
To become a Bell Boat Helm Provider, you must complete a logbook. This requires you to work alongside providers of the course as an observer or support staff. During these you must use your logbook to record your reflections on the course. The Provider of the course will also complete a section to help you reflect on your skills and areas of development. You must have evidence of at least 2 courses before you can move on to the next section.
The next step is to work on a course with a current Provider. Their role will be to observe you delivering the course. If they are happy with your performance, they will complete your endorsement page and the logbook will be complete. Completed logbooks are then sent back to Paddles Up Training for final checks and approval.
Being a successful Provider will involve:
- Having great rescue and personal skills in a range of craft
- Being great at teaching leadership and decision-making skills
- Once qualified, being committed to supporting the development of aspirant providers
