Description
Your Advanced Canoe Award will enhance your canoe skills and your ability to make appropriate decisions for safe days out canoeing in advanced conditions. As with all of the Personal Performance Awards, your award will be tailored around you and what you wish to achieve.
You will work alongside your Coach to build on your experience of wilderness journeys in a variety of water venues. The award will allow you to make the right decisions on rivers grade 3(4), open water over 500 metres from the shore with winds up to force 5, as well as simple coastlines with easy landing throughout.
Where can it be used?
During your course you will work with your Coach to develop the skills and the environmental awareness to allow you to safely paddle on:
- Grade 3(4) rivers
- Large areas of open water over 500m from shore in winds up to and including force 5
- Simple coastlines with easy landing throughout.
As a consequence the Progressive Canoe Award has strong links with our Leadership and Coaching qualifications.
It is a great way of ensuring your personal skills meet the requirement of the Moderate Water Canoe Leader Qualifications and Canoe Coaching Qualifications.

Content
You and your Coach will build upon your own extensive decision making and personal skills. Together, you will look at factors such as who you are paddling with and where it is suitable to paddle. This will allow you to make confident decisions and to undertake a safe journey.

Course Assessment
The Advanced Canoe Award has no formal assessment. You will work with your Coach to develop your decision making and paddling skills to undertake safe trips on more advanced water. Your decision making will evolve throughout the award and you will be given your award once you are ready!
