Why become a White Water Canoe Coach?

First of all, you will be joining a community of like minded individuals, keen to learn, develop and have fun whilst sharing their love of paddlesport. The Coach Award takes what you know and supports you through formal and informal development opportunities, part of your journey will involve an assessment, but the assessment isn’t the end as we believe in life long opportunities for learning.

The Coach Award is used by the self employed, clubs, centres and organisations as an appropriate level of training for coaches who develop individuals paddlesport knowledge and skills in a White Water environment.

What can a White Water Canoe Coach do?

The Coach Award is designed for you, to support  you coaching  paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills.

You will coach in paddlers in the White Water environment. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills as well as river running tactics.

As a Coach you can work independently or you could be deployed by a club, centre or organisation. Being a Coach allows you to design coaching to support their learners and provide Paddle UK Awards and Training such as:

There will be opportunities to develop and progress your own paddling skills and meet like-minded people during the course. Many of our course candidates develop long lasting friendships, connections and contacts.

Registration

The Canoe White Water Coach has a formal registration requirement.

COACH AWARD REGISTRATION

Registration can take place at any point during your learning journey but must be done ahead of your assessment to give you the chance to complete the eLearning before your assessment.

To register you only need to hold the following prerequisites:

  • You need to access your membership portal and register through the portal.
  • Click on the registration tab and follow the on screen instructions.

Your Registration covers:

  • Coach Award eLearning. This needs to be completed before your Assessment
  • Advice, support and guidance
  • Registration services
  • Provision of Internal Verification
  • Provision of digital platforms and resources
  • Administering qualifications including e-certificate and digital records
  • Enhanced insurance

ASSESSMENT CHECK IN

Coach Award Assessment Check in is required before you attend your Assessment course. The purpose of the Check in is to confirm you hold all prerequisites. It's quick, easy and confirmation is sent straight to your inbox*.

This should then be shared with the assessor to confirm eligibility for assessment. It also gives you peace of mind that you have everything you need in place and you can focus on enjoying your assessment.

Please do not try to Check In unless you hold all prerequisites:

  • Canoe White Water Coach Registration,
  • Coach Award eLearning,
  • Core Coach Training (or APL),
  • Canoe White Water Leader (or APL),
  • Canoe White Water Coach Training (or APL),
  • Safeguarding Training (dated within the last 3 years),
  • 2 day First Aid (dated within the last 3 years),
  • Full National Association Membership.
*Note - as long as you meet the prerequisites, you will be automatically sent confirmation of your Assessment Check In.

When should I Check In?

When you have all of the prerequisites in place

And

At least 2 weeks before your assessment, this allows us to resolve any issues in plenty of time!

HOW DO I CHECK IN?

  • This is done the same way that you register through the membership portal.
  • Ensure your record is up to date before you start**.
  • Click on the registration tab and follow the on screen instructions.
  • **Note – if you are aware that your record is out of date (for example your First Aid has expired) we recommend you update your record before you start.

Content

The White Water Canoe Coach is made up of four formal elements, however for experienced paddlers/ coaches you could consider Accreditation of Prior Learning(APL) to move directly to the formal element that suits your development click here to find out more about APL.

Core Coach Training

Typically run over 2 days, the Core Coach Training will develop your understanding of the WHO and the HOW of coaching. You will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and some core coaching skills. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course. There are no formal Personal Performance Award or Safety Award requirements, however, to get the best from your course you need to feel comfortable in or on your craft and be able to independently paddle on sheltered water. We recommend holding the the Paddle Explore Award before booking on your training (or equivalent)

White Water Canoe Coach Training

Typically run over 2 days the Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the WHAT (discipline specific skills) and WHERE you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help you to plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help you coach typical learners on White Water. To attend the training you must hold the Canoe Leader Award or White Water Canoe Leader Award

Coach Award eLearning

The Coach Award eLearning is an online set of activities that need to be completed before assessment when completing the BCAB Coach Award. These activities are only available once you have registered for the Coach Award, after which, a log in will be generated and sent to you. You can register at anytime, but it must be complete before you Check-in for assessment. The activities inside this eLearning package are:

Course Assessment

We do everything we can to take the stress out of assessments, we are focused on the journey and not the destination. The experience will be safe, engaging and enjoyable, with the you at the heart of the process involving you in as much of the decision making as possible.

As soon as you are considering taking your assessment we encourage you to 'Check-in'. This free peace of mind registration checks you have everything in place for your assessment - find out more on the Registration Tab.

Once your checked in you can arrange an assessment either by using the booking now tab to find an advertised course or by using the Provider Finder to 'find' a White Water Canoe Coach Assessor.

Your assessor will guide you through the stages of arranging your assessment, discussing with you the best times and dates for the assessment, helping you ensure you have someone to coach and the appropriate assessment conditions on the day.
