Racing Perform Award

Description

10 CPD Points

Your Racing Perform Award is designed to give you the confidence and the skills to enjoy competing at a higher level. The award builds on your experience of sprint and marathon conditions and introduces the skills required for ocean racing.

This award will delve further into the preparation required before and during a race. You will bear in mind the best equipment for the weather conditions and ensure that you have the correct clothing, equipment and safety gear to cope with mishaps in more advanced and more open water areas. Mentally preparing for a race is also important. Your Coach will ask you to consider techniques and tactics to cope with the pressure of a racing environment. This will allow you to deliver the best race possible.

You will continue to review and improve your own technique. In addition to forward paddling and manoeuvring the craft, you will now be considering:

  • Wash Hanging
  • Standing Starts
  • Portaging

As well as individual paddling, you will also consider and review how you can improve your technique within a crew boat. You will look at how to keep stroke rhythm and how to steer as a team. In addition, you will need to create a racing plan as a team, taking into consideration the opinions of the other paddlers within your boat.

Each day we spend training or racing further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two sessions ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision making ability and helps us link training to racing.

The award will focus on ensuring that we are aware of all of the environmental conditions that could affect our race, as well as other water users. It will help you to select the right kit and equipment to help you perform at your best. You will look at the best way to conduct strokes for maximum efficiency and how to keep yourself safe on the water.

This will include:

  • Location
  • Getting Ready
  • At the Water
  • Racing Rules, Techniques and Tactics
  • After the Training Session/Race
  • Future Development

Course Assessment

The Racing Perform Award has no formal assessment. After each session you will look at your performance and how it fits in with your long-term goals; you will also look at how you can ensure the work done in training links into your racing. As such, the award is certificated when you are ready.
