River Raft Racing Award

Description

10 CPD Points

Your River Raft Racing Award further develops your rafting skills. It introduces the specific skills needed to create a safe and enjoyable experience on natural rivers. It also prepares you to paddle the river without a Coach or Guide present.

With natural rivers there are more environmental factors; you will need to know more information about the river. Water quality, levels and grade are all key pieces of information that can determine where and when you train or race. You will continue to explore the correct equipment and kit you need for your race. As well as ensuring that you have the right warm up routine to prepare for the race.

Your Coach will take you through the further rescue skills required when rafting down natural rivers. You will learn to identify dangerous places on the river by looking at the water and its features. The award will also look at how to repair a raft if it becomes punctured.

As well as further developing your forward paddling, steering and pacing you will explore the techniques and tactics that need to be adapted when paddling a natural river. The water levels may change between your races on the river and, as such, you will need to develop your decision-making skills to pick out lines during the race and being prepared to change them if required.

After the session you, your Coach and with input from your team will again assess your performance in the race, you will decide where you wish to go next. You will decide what you need to develop next to achieve your long-term goals and to aid your team’s performance. Additionally, you will consider how you can improve your general fitness off the water to help with your performance.

Each rafting session further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two experiences ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating our performance will evolve our decision-making and rafting skills.
