Flat Water Raft Racing Award

Description

10 CPD Points

Your Flat Water Racing Award will give you the ability to enjoy raft training and racing in a flat water environment. It will introduce you to the raft racing specific skills which create an enjoyable experience on the water.

You will explore the factors which create a safe race or session on the water. Factors such as the water level and the weather forecast will be considered. This will allow you to choose the correct equipment for the weather to keep you safe and warm. You will learn the correct way to lift the raft to ensure there is no risk of injury.

Whats involved?

Rafting is a team sport; this brings additional considerations into play. Your Coach will ask you to consider what rescue skills are required to ensure that you keep both yourself and your team mates safe. You will need to consider the individuals within the team and where it is best to position them. This is determined by analysing the strength and experience of each member and deciding where it would be put to best use.

During this award you will look at the key skills that will allow you to stay in control and stay relaxed whilst moving the raft on the water. You will look at what strokes are effective to paddle the craft in a straight line and to steer it. The award will ask you to consider who is best placed to choose what strokes are required. You will also need to consider when it is beneficial to change the pace.

After each session you will work with both your Coach and your team to discuss how the session has gone. Looking at successes and points to improve will help you to decide where to go next. You can also look at what makes other teams successful for your own further development.

Each rafting session further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more fun experience on the water. With no two experiences ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of rafting skills and decision making ability.
