Stand Up Paddleboard Paddle Surf Award

Description

10 CPD Points

Your Stand Up Paddleboard Paddle Surf Award will give you the personal and decision-making skills to enjoy your first wave riding experiences. You will learn how to catch, ride and exit a wave.

In order to have an enjoyable day out surfing, you will need to make sure that we look at some key factors before deciding where to paddle. You will need to look at swell, wave height, the tide and the weather. This will make sure we have all the information we need to decide that it is safe to go out on the water.

You will need to consider the best equipment to keep you safe on the water. This includes a personal flotation device (PFD) and a leash. As well as a board that is suitable for surfing. You will need to consider other water users and how you will transport your board to and from the water.

What is involved?

When Stand Up Paddleboard paddle surfing it is important to be in control. This award will give you the range of skills and knowledge that you will need. You will look at how you will enter the surf and how you can identify when and where a wave will break. As well as how to choose one to surf and how to position yourself to do this. You will look at how to stay in control whilst riding the wave and how to carry out a good first bottom turn. After this you will then learn how to exit the wave whilst still standing and conserving energy for the next wave. You will learn how to get back to shore should you fall from your board. As well as how to get back onto your board if you fall off in shallow water. Your Coach will also take you through what to do to rescue an unconscious casualty. As well as to deal with any broken or lost equipment.

After each session, you and your Coach will determine where you will go next in accordance to your own goals. Each day we spend paddling further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two surf experiences ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision making ability.
