Description
Your Wild Water Racing Excel Award will build on your skills to enable you to have an enjoyable race or session on grade 3-4 water.
You will continue to look at the key factors of the weather, the water levels and grade, as well as the features to make a decision on when and where to paddle. This includes ensuring that we are aware of any hazards that the water may be concealing and the best way to deal with them. As well as looking at the topography of the river to see in what way it will affect your run.
What does it involve?
Before you get onto the water you will need to consider the equipment you wish to use. As you will be paddling in more advanced conditions, you need to ensure that you have the correct personal safety equipment to aid you. You will also need to consider whether your boat and equipment can cope with the demand that more advanced white water brings. Should you be paddling in a group, you will need to ensure that you choose a location everyone is comfortable to paddle on. You will also consider what you as a group or an individual can do to prepare for the paddle, both physically and mentally. This could be a warm up or by walking the stretch to identify any difficult features.
Your skills on white water will be further developed. You will continue to learn how to read the water and to use it to your advantage. This includes using features to help you steer your craft down the course. You will learn the fastest and cleanest lines to take into and out of features that require a minimal number of steering strokes. As well as how you can regain speed should you lose it. You will continue to work on your rescue skills. This includes rolling on both sides in advanced water, as well as helping another paddler who has capsized. You will also be able to judge when it is safe to chase a boat or equipment that is lost.
