Wild Water Racing Explore Award

Description

10 CPD Points

Your Wild Water Racing Explore Award will give you the foundation skills and techniques that you will need to have an enjoyable session on sheltered water.

You will start to develop an understanding of the environment where you will train, as well as consider drink and nutrition requirements to get the best from your session. This includes looking at the water levels, the grade of the water and the features of the location. You will learn to choose the correct equipment for the weather and water and the best boat set up to allow you to get what you need from the session. You will also need to consider how the best way to get on and off the water will be. This includes how best to carry your boat and equipment without causing damage or injury.

Whats it all about?

When paddling in wild water you need to ensure that you are in control. Your Coach will show you the fundamentals needed such as the correct posture, connectivity, power transfer and feel. You will learn how to identify the best features to help you turn the boat. Including how you can use edge to endure stability and speed during your turns. You will learn how to use the wash of another boat to your advantage.

You will learn the correct recovery techniques and strokes to help you get your balance back. As well as how to get safely back into the craft or the shore should you or another paddler capsize. You will also look at the best way to swim when in the white water.

After each session, you and your Coach will reflect on what you learnt and what you can focus on during the next session. You will consider what information can be gained from watching other paddlers. This includes looking at how they maintain their rhythm and pace. You will also consider how best to balance your training and your life to ensure your body has the time it needs to recover.

Each day we spend in a wild water racing craft further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two paddling sessions ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision making ability to help us link training to racing.

Working with your Coach, you will then look at developing your Wild Water Racing skills focusing on enjoyment and take an active part within sessions. During and after each session, you and your Coach discuss your progression and agree areas of focus to continue your understanding and skills.

This will include:

  • Choosing a Location
  • Getting Ready
  • At the Water
  • Wild Water Skills
  • After the Session
  • Future Development

Course Assessment

The Wild Water Racing Award has no formal assessment. It is based around your skills and the requirements at an introductory stage, with your Coach you will explore and develop both your understanding and skills. Your Coach will work with you on the decision making and skills that you require and, when you are ready, you will gain the Wild Water Racing Explore Award.
