Paddlesport Leader Provider Moderation

Quality training from the world's largest paddling course provider

Hear from Jenna, who recently ran the Paddlesport Leader Provider Moderation.

A moderation event is a chance for British Canoeing Awarding Body Providers to make sure they are up to date with current best practices, share their knowledge and experiences of delivering the award and to get any niggling questions they may have answered.
For British Canoeing Awarding Body, it is important to ensure standardisation of assessments across all of the Providers of an award. As well as ensure that their skills remain at or above the standard required of a Provider. These events are facilitated by one or more of the National Trainer team.

This week I ran a Moderation for 5 Paddlesport Leader Providers in Nottingham.

We were based at Colwick Park Adventure Centre which provided a great environment for the day. We got some unseasonably warm weather which made the rescue session particularly enjoyable.
The Covid-secure day started in our outdoor classroom (sitting on the grass) with a conversation around experiences to date of running training and assessment courses. We also shared ideas around how we are all managing the Covid risks. We discussed the minor changes to the award that will come in with the whole suite of new Leadership Awards in January. Once on the water, the group took over. Each Provider ran a short section of the training programme and reviewed each one together.
After lunch, we discussed assessment decision making, looking at the conditions required for assessment. We looked at what makes for a good venue and how we manage the decisions made in the lead up to assessment by the candidates and the Assessor. Then it was back onto the water again. This time to share our experience and check currency on all of the rescues that we expect of a candidate. We discussed what best practice looks like. As well as various ways to perform some of the rescues with different boat designs or environmental conditions. We discussed what we are looking for as a pass standard from our candidates.
It is great to see another group of really high quality providers coming through moderation, and completely getting on board with the ‘community of practice’ style of the events. It was an honour to work with them all for the day.
